Brutal at first glance, the world depicted by JOLAGREEN23 is much more complex than it seems. Full of nuances, loaded with images and references, the dark and authentic stories of the rapper from Bois-Colombes are systematically born from an impulse, a spontaneous surge. Instinctive, Jorghen - his first name - has always been. At the age of 22, he firmly believes in his lucky star and the signals that life sends him: his “luck”, as he describes it, is somewhat the guiding thread of his journey.
It is this that encourages him to get behind the microphone in 2021, to contribute to the French rap scene, in which he no longer finds what he is looking for as a listener. It is also this that pushes him to unveil his very first track (Mikasa, feat. Diska), just a few days after recording it. Finally, it is thanks to her that everyone in the neighborhood calls him “la green” (a nod to the lucky color green). The 23 that punctuates his blaze is a tribute to his favorite number, which has been omnipresent in his life until now. A reference to his date of birth - Jo was born on March 23rd - as well as to the iconic number 23 of the Chicago Bulls, Michael Jordan, the ultimate legend of his favorite sport: basketball.
From his years spent wearing out his sneakers on playgrounds and basketball courts, JOLAGREEN23 has retained the style and attitude. When he raps, it is with spectacular fluidity. His phrasing bounces off the drill rhythms, like when orange leather caresses the asphalt. His lyrics hit the hi-hats like a shot through the net. His powerful voice crashes down on the kicks, like a violent poster-dunk.
In the “92 Bronx side”, where brick-lined buildings are reminiscent of New York projects, rap is booming. Behind the rise to power of the Kerchak phenomenon, aka the prince of jersey drill, a whole school is emerging: 410, Diska, KABBSKY and therefore JOLAGREEN23. These are all figures with whom the interested party crossed swords and the microphone from his very first appearances. In 2022, he asserted his solo identity by methodically releasing his singles throughout the year: 3945, 23ZERO, and RONDO9.
Then came the time for the first music videos, GOBI and 1001FT, which allowed the man from the Paris region to continue to shape his universe: shot in his neighborhood, their pared-down style reinforced the feeling of darkness and oppression that emanated from his music and, characterized by an ultra-referenced style, it did not leave the industry indifferent: the labels begin their charm offensive, but it is the Blue Sky team, a pioneer in the art of detection, that wins the day.
